SINGAPORE – An investigation by the Department of Health (DH) into the sale of fake Viagra has revealed a number of fake online pharmacies selling prescription medicines for erectile dysfunction (ED) and similar illnesses, which could be bought without a prescription from a licensed pharmacy in the country.
The drugs could be illegally imported into the country through unregulated online pharmacies or even into the country illegally from a country outside the EU, DH said.
According to the investigation, fake Viagra is sold in five different countries including Singapore and Malaysia. The pills are being sold through websites that sell counterfeit versions of the medicine, including ones produced by pharmaceutical companies.
“We are investigating the sale of these fake medications,” said a spokesman for the Ministry of Health, which regulates the health care industry, who did not give further details.
He said the ministry is also cracking down on illegal online pharmacies selling counterfeit versions of the medicines, which are often sold in unregulated, unregulated environments, including the internet.
He said it is crucial for users to check with their doctor first before buying any medication from a potentially harmful online pharmacy.
“Some of these drugs may contain harmful ingredients, and we are working with local authorities to find out what steps we can take to prevent or reduce the risk of these adverse effects from these illegal online pharmacies,” he said.
The ministry has received numerous reports of fake online pharmacies selling prescription medicines for erectile dysfunction, including fake Viagra, containing harmful ingredients and fake medicines that are not regulated or endorsed by the government.
According to the investigation, Viagra is the second most commonly prescribed medication in Singapore after erectile dysfunction medication.
The FDA has previously detected fake Viagra being sold in counterfeit stores in Singapore.
“These fake online pharmacies are often sold without a prescription in the unregulated, unregulated, and potentially dangerous environment that is the internet,” said Dr John Thompson, the director of research at the National Pharmaceutical Research Organisation (NPRO), who did not give specific details.
“Many people purchase prescription drugs online, and some of these drugs may have been bought illegally or are not regulated by the government and may be unsafe. They found that one of the websites, Amazon.com, sold genuine Viagra in Singapore and a number of other countries.
“Some websites have hidden prices, and sometimes counterfeit products are sold online that are not regulated or endorsed by the government. It is important for consumers to be aware of these dangers and to seek medical advice before buying any prescription medication online.”
Thompson said the NPRO is working with the Ministry of Health and other health departments to find out what steps can be taken to prevent or reduce the risk of adverse events linked to illegal online pharmacies.
“Our goal is to find out if there are any signs of an adverse effect to the online pharmacy, so that we can take appropriate action,” he said.
