Men in the UK will be able to buy Viagra over the counter after consulting with a pharmacist and without a prescription for the first time today.
ViagraConnect manufacturer, Pfizer, estimates more than a fifth of men aged over 18 in Britain suffer from erectile dysfunction, but almost half of those over 40 have not sought medical help.
The erectile dysfunction drug will be available in 14,000 stores across Britain and via pharmacy websites.
The tablets will be available exclusively from Boots until 10 April.
Those aged 18 and over will be able to buy the tablets following a conversation with a pharmacist or after filling out an online form. Men can ask to speak to a pharmacist in a private consultation room if preferred.
The pharmacists will determine whether treatment is appropriate for the patient and give advice on erectile dysfunction, usage of the medicine and potential side effects. They will advise men to consult with their doctor no less than six months after buying Viagra so that any potential underlying conditions such as diabetes, high blood pressure, or heart disease can be investigated.
A Boots spokesperson said that the man affected by erectile dysfunction should buy the drug themselves wherever practically possible.
Men with severe heart problems, those at high risk of heart problems, liver failure, kidney failure, strokes or those taking certain other medicines, will still need to be prescribed the drug under the supervision of a doctor.
A four-pack of the tablets will cost £19.99 and an eight-pack £34.99.
Men who buy it will be advised that they can take a 50 mg tablet an hour before having sex, but should not use more than one pill a day.
Viagra is is already available as an NHS prescription free of charge for those eligible not to pay for their prescriptions.
The pharmacist will decide how many packs will be supplied in a transaction.
The Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency (MHRA) announced in November it was to steer men away from buying the tablets from. In 2016 £17m worth of unlicensed and counterfeit Viagra was seized.
Kristie Sourial, Pfizer’s medical manager, said: “It’s important to remember that erectile dysfunction is a medical condition, and that the impact often goes beyond the physical symptoms – it can lead to men feeling anxious, depressed and lacking in confidence.
“Our hope is that the availability of Viagra Connect in pharmacies will encourage men who do nothing about their erectile dysfunction to seek help, and encourage those who are inclined to seek help to do so sooner.”

A new study is published in the journalon Tuesday. It shows that in a group of patients, using sildenafil and tadalafil, can improve erectile function, the authors wrote in the journal.
The study, which involved more than 50,000 men, involved more than 1,000 participants.
Sildenafil and tadalafil are the active ingredients in the two drugs, and have similar mechanisms of action. The effects of these two drugs were studied for 20 weeks, while Viagra and Cialis were tested for 20 weeks.
The researchers found that using sildenafil and tadalafil significantly improved erectile function in men with mild-to-moderate erectile dysfunction, as well as in those with mild to moderate heart disease and hypertension.

Researchers said they hope this new study will encourage more people to use ED drugs more widely and potentially lead to more effective treatment.
The researchers, led by Dr. John L. R. Wainwright, a urologist, and lead author of the study, are seeking to understand how sildenafil and tadalafil work in patients.
“Sildenafil and tadalafil work by changing the way nitric oxide is released, and that causes vasodilation, which leads to increased blood flow to the penis and erection,” Dr. T. Michael E. Smith, a professor of urology, and co-author of the paper, said in a press release.
The new study was published in the journal in May.
“In patients with ED who have not been treated with nitrates, sildenafil and tadalafil can be a useful therapy to help improve erectile function and sexual activity,” said Dr. Smith, a professor of urology, and co-author of the paper,. “These drugs act on a specific type of nitric oxide called guanylate cyclase, which is essential for the production of cGMP, an essential molecule in erectile function.”
Researchers said this study supports the need to consider using other ED drugs, including sildenafil and tadalafil, in order to see whether they can improve erectile function.
“We also hope that this new study will encourage more patients to consider other ED drugs to see if they can help improve their erectile function and improve sexual activity,” said Dr. Edward J. D’Ambrosi, director of urology at the University of South Carolina, in a press release.
This study was conducted by researchers from the University of South Carolina at Chapel Hill and was approved by the FDA.
“We believe that sildenafil and tadalafil should be used judiciously, as the drug has fewer cardiovascular risks than the other ED drugs,” said Dr. Leland F. Schlosser, director of urology at the University of Southern California. “This study supports the need for more research on sildenafil and tadalafil in this population and should allow for more appropriate research in this age group.”
Dr. Lee added that the study also has important implications for the health care system:
“Sildenafil is not an aphrodisiac and sexual activity can be a result of sexual arousal, which has been associated with erectile dysfunction in men. If people were to take sildenafil or tadalafil, they could be able to achieve an erection that would be more difficult to achieve,” he said.
“The findings are also important in regard to improving erectile function and helping to protect the health of patients with cardiovascular disease and hypertension,” said Dr. David E. Graziano, director of the Institute for Sexual Medicine at Georgetown University Medical Center.
